How does trust strengthen the 1% for the Planet mission?
"If you can create a company of honest messaging and truth, your customers will look to you for what’s right.”
—Yvon Chouinard
At 1% for the Planet, our work centers on growing a global community of businesses and individuals engaged in environmental philanthropy. 1% for the Planet Business & Individual Members directly support environmental nonprofits—forming partnerships that allow members to have deeper engagement in the environmental issues that align with their values.
Productive, meaningful and transformative partnerships between nonprofits and their donors—just like any healthy relationships—are founded on trust. We want to foster the type of trust that brings our community closer together. That’s why 1% for the Planet uses partnership advising to connect members with mission-aligned nonprofit partners. Creating deep, authentic relationships is how we grow stronger together—and how we drive global change that inspires others to join our network.

With a network of more than 5,300 nonprofit partners, 5,500 business members and 1,000 individual members who make 1% commitments to support those nonprofits, 1% for the Planet is a relationship hub! That’s why we have embedded principles of Trust-Based Philanthropy in our practices and culture. We believe trust should be at the center of how we, collectively, address power and build equity for our planet and future generations.
The value of trust is why 1% for the Planet went through the process to earn a 2022 Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid (formerly GuideStar) and to become an accredited charity of the Better Business Bureau’s Give.org, meeting 20 standards of charity accountability. 1% for the Planet shows our commitment to accountability by sharing information like audited financials, impact metrics and self-reported demographic data from our staff and board.

We appreciate Candid and Give.org’s work to provide U.S.-based nonprofits with the opportunity to showcase their own commitment to transparency. For U.S. nonprofits that have not yet gone through the process to earn a Seal of Transparency, Candid says, “Earning a Bronze Seal takes less than five minutes.” For nonprofits who are interested in becoming an accredited charity of Give.org, they can learn more about Give.org’s free accreditation process and 20 standards for charity accountability. As 1% for the Planet and our nonprofit partners focus on the urgent issues facing people and the planet, let’s also continue to showcase the value of transparency in building relationships and growing support for our work.
