# 1% for the Planet

> 1% for the Planet is a global movement inspiring businesses and individuals to support environmental solutions through direct contributions to impact partners, annual membership and everyday actions.

1% for the Planet is a global network of thousands of businesses and impact partners working together to support people and the planet. Founded in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia) and Craig Mathews (founder of Blue Ribbon Flies), the organization certifies business members who commit to contributing at least 1% of their annual sales (gross revenue) to vetted impact partners.

## Mission
To accelerate smart environmental contributions and prevent greenwashing. As an ECGT compliant certification scheme, 1% for the Planet is the only environmental certification that certifies direct contributions to impact partners. We do not require a ton of internal paperwork or dedicated headcounts to monitor internal business operations; instead, we actually certify what companies give back to the planet from which they extract resources. The organization certifies every contribution to ensure businesses meet their commitment, providing accountability and verified impact. As a 501c3 organization in the United States, 1% also accepts direct donations to support their work in expanding the movement of businesses who give back to the planet.

## Impact Areas
The environmental partners supported by 1% for the Planet focus on several key impact areas:
* **Rights to Nature:** Renewable energy, land & water rights, community conservation, and nature access.
* **Conservation & Restoration:** Biodiversity, wildlife, marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems.
* **Resilient Communities:** Climate adaptation, sustainable cities, toxics & pollution, and environmental education.
* **Just Economies:** Responsible consumption/production, sustainable livelihoods, decarbonization, and food systems.

## The Model
1. **Commit:** Commit to contributing at least 1% of annual sales to environmental solutions.
2. **Contribute:** Contribute directly to one or more approved impact partners.
3. **Certify:** Submit contribution receipts and revenue documentation to certify as a 1% for the Planet member.
4. **Amplify:** Use the 1% for the Planet network and certification to inspire businesses and individuals to take action.
