As a 1% member you will:
Our aim is for every individual, regardless of income level, to be able to join as an individual member by making your 1% commitment. Your 1% commitment should be an amount that is personally meaningful for you. Note that we require a $50 minimum membership dues payment to help cover the cost of the program, and to be able to provide you with the benefits listed above. Dues payments count toward member 1% commitments. For example, if an individual commits $500; $50 would go to 1% for the Planet as membership dues and the member donates and/or volunteers the remaining $450 to the environmental nonprofits of their choice.
Yes, 1% for the Planet individual members donate annual membership dues at sign up, and each year upon renewing membership. Membership dues count toward your overall annual giving commitment. The dues payment is calculated to be ~10% of your total commitment (or a minimum of $50, whichever is greater). Members have the opportunity to donate a higher percentage as they deem appropriate. 1% for the Planet annual membership dues help to cover operational costs associated with holding members accountable to their commitment, building updated marketing assets, researching and vetting nonprofit partners, and hosting networking events. Annual dues also allow us to invest in growing our global network by reaching out to new potential members and educating consumers about the value of supporting 1% for the Planet members.
We use the current estimated national value of volunteer time, which is $29.95/hour USD (as of July 2022). Members provide documentation from the nonprofit showing the number of hours volunteered, and we use the current value of volunteer time to calculate the in-kind donation.
Yes, membership dues count toward your total 1% for the Planet giving commitment.
1% for the Planet Individual Memberships are within a calendar year. At the end of the year, we reach out to current members with the opportunity to renew their commitment to the planet.
Any environmental nonprofit who becomes a partner in our network must be referred by a 1% for the Planet member, or our staff. This referral is the first layer of our approval process. We then verify their necessary nonprofit registration, and confirm the organization has sound financials. We ensure the environment is the primary focus of all approved nonprofits by having them complete an application, which assesses mission, program/projects, areas of impact and other factors. A nonprofit is invited to join the network as a partner if it passes these initial checks.
Yes! You can support multiple nonprofit partners as part of your commitment. After deciding on your total commitment amount, you can divide your donations between organizations as you see fit.
Of course! If you're able, you can always donate more than your 1% commitment amount.
1% for the Planet donations go directly from individuals to nonprofits. To ensure that your donation is tax deductible, you will need to confirm with your nonprofit partner.
We understand that choosing to give back 1% of your annual income to the planet is a big step! The goal is for it to be a meaningful amount for you, and for our planet—and we make it flexible by providing multiple ways to fulfill your commitment (via monetary donations or volunteer time). We suggest that individual members commit 1% of their annual salary or income, however we do not require any documentation or records to verify your salary/income. We trust and encourage all of our individual members to strive to meet this high standard.
We highly encourage our members to fulfill their 1% commitment by donating to one (or multiple) of the thousands of vetted environmental nonprofits in our network. As a member, any donation you make to one of our approved nonprofit partners will count toward your 1% commitment. In the event you'd like to support an environmental nonprofit outside our network, we will provide you with the opportunity to refer a nonprofit for consideration. Nonprofits will need to apply and fully meet our standards for nonprofit participation. If you would like to refer a nonprofit or you’re looking for a nonprofit in our network and don’t see them in the directory, please don't hesitate to reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org or give us a call at 802-861-0460.
