Since its inception in 2007 Stop Illegal Fishing (SIF) has galvanized support for the fight against illegal fishing across Africa and beyond. It creates a network and acts as a focal point for those working to tackle illegal fishing, providing practical support and a sense of common purpose.
SIF focuses its efforts on supporting the institutions and countries most affected by illegal fishing. By encouraging countries to share information, communicate and cooperate. A perfect example of this approach is SIFs flagship programme, FISH-i Africa, which has shown that significant results can be achieved with the correct strategic and operational support and has successfully increased compliance to fisheries regulations in the Western Indian Ocean.
In recognition of its impact, SIF was awarded the highly prestigious United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation Margarita Lizárraga Medal for 2014-2015.
