Generous support from Mountain Equipment Coop accelerates our work in Canada.
Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC) first partnered with 1% for the Planet in 2007, formalizing their commitment to donate a full one percent of annual gross sales to environmental causes in Canada. MEC was the first large-scale retailer to join the 1% for the Planet movement when they signed on in 2007. They’ve been a leader in the network ever since, inspiring other businesses to take a strategic approach to environmental philanthropy.
We’re grateful for MEC’s financial support, which has played an integral role in the 1% FTP movement’s growth in Canada.
MEC is inspired by adventure—being active, pushing boundaries, reaching for our goals and dreams. It’s about finding places that fuel our passions and sustain the planet, about taking a stand for the places that matter. Since 1987, MEC has invested over $21 million in Canada’s environmental and outdoor communities through their community involvement program.
MEC helps protect space for adventure by conserving ecologically and recreationally important places and by inspiring and enabling Canadians to be active outside.
- Conserving Places: MEC is committed to conserving the ecologically and recreationally important places where we adventure and that sustain us.
- Enabling People: MEC is committed to inspiring and enabling Canadians to experience nature and lead active outdoor lives.

Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS): MEC has supported dozens of CPAWS conservation projects over two decades of environmental granting. Since 2004, MEC has provided core funding to the national office to strengthen the CPAWS voice for wilderness conservation. Through ongoing support of CPAWS’ direct advocacy for a healthy network of parks and protected areas, as well as campaigns such as the Boreal Rendezvous and the Nahanni Forever Tour, MEC is helping CPAWS realize its vision for wilderness protection in Canada.
Canadian Freshwater Alliance: The CFA and MEC share a passion for conserving Canada’s ecologically and recreationally important freshwater places where we adventure and that sustain us. They’re collaborating to engage with, and build the capacity of, the diverse freshwater community to collectively secure healthy waters across Canada and ensure Canada’s fresh water is thriving now and into the future.
Protect Our Winters: POW is a global non-profit dedicated to fighting climate change on behalf of the winter sports community. MEC has joined with POW to mobilize Canadian snow sports enthusiasts and to increase awareness about climate change. This partnership is all about keeping the snow in snow sports, and engaging Canadians on the very real threat that climate change poses to winter recreation in Canada.
Leave No Trace Canada: LNT promotes and inspires responsible outdoor recreation in Canada’s wild spaces. When a group of outdoor educators from across the country approached MEC looking to establish the highly regarded Leave No Trace program in Canada, LNT Canada was born. MEC provided seed funding, took a seat on their steering committee and helped build their infrastructure. MEC is committed to ensuring that Leave No Trace continues to grow and flourish and ultimately teach Canadians that even small changes in behavior have monumental impacts on the outdoors.
