The Unplugged Woodshop is Toronto’s newest and hippest, ( as well as being Canada’s first ) “hand tool-only” Woodworking School, Store, Maker Space and Studio. Located at Carlaw and Dundas, in the old Carlaw Industrial Building, it offers classes and courses for the aspiring urban wood worker.
Owner and Instructor Tom Fidgen has been designing and building custom furniture for the past 10 years and his track record should speak for itself. Tom has two published books on furniture making, ( Made by Hand - Furniture Projects from the Unplugged Woodshop, 2008 F&W Media, and The Unplugged Woodshop - Hand Crafted Projects for the Home and Workshop, 2012 The Taunton Press ) as well as teaching wood working with hand tools in Australia, Germany, the UK, the USA and of course, back home in Canada.
The UW-Toronto offers instruction and education, as well as tools, supplies and materials.
Why in 2016, is there a hand-tool only wood working school in downtown Toronto?
Because hand tools afford the modern wood worker a quieter, safer, healthier, and arguably better way to work wood. For the condo dweller who doesn’t have room for a work shop, to the hand tool enthusiast who wants to learn more about the fine art of furniture making, the Unplugged Woodshop has something for everyone at every level.
