As you read in Brittany’s previous post, here at 1% FTP we are getting pumped up for this year’s election! Since we will all be voting in just over a month, it’s time to get informed. Make sure to follow Patagonia’s Vote The Environment campaign on Twitter, to learn why others will vote for what is important to them- and share your reasons too!

I wanted to take a second out of my busy day of Tweeting to introduce 15Five, a new member based in San Francisco. 15Five helps CEOs and managers get to know the pulse of their company by surfacing problems, celebrating wins, discovering great ideas and staying tuned in to morale.
The idea behind 15Five originated in the 1980s from the entrepreneur Paul Hawken, who realized that if he asked all of his employees to spend 15 minutes writing a report that took their manager no more than 5 minutes to read, his employees would feel heard and he would have better insight into the workings of his company. Paul shared it with his friend Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia (and 1% FTP!), who had built his company around his passion for climbing and spent ample time each year away from Patagonia pursuing his passion.

Yvon used this practice to keep his employees engaged and to stay informed even when he was out of the office climbing and surfing for up to 6 months a year, as covered in a 1988 Inc Magazine article. As the idea behind 15Five became popular because of 1%’s founder Yvon, the company has decided to join as a member to honor him, along with their commitment to both Integrated Philanthropy and their care for the planet. Building charitable giving into their business model was essential. Welcome 15Five!

It’s been a beautiful start to fall here in Vermont, with the foliage looking as great as ever! Although the following members joined this summer (it’s been fall for 3 days!!), it’s never too late to give a new member shout-out! Welcome to Natural Design from the UK and Rainmaker Payroll from Santa Barbara, CA!

Natural Design specializes in creating beautiful paper flowers, gifts, decorations, favors and stationery for weddings and special occasions. Their paper flowers are made from “saa paper”, a sustainable resource and all of their stationery is 100% recycled. Ann-Marie Edmondson, the founder of Natural Design was inspired to join 1% for the Planet after reading Yvon Chounard’s book. She really admires Patagonia’s approach to business and is pleased to be part of this responsible business community. Welcome Ann-Marie!

Rainmaker Payroll provides payroll services to small businesses, households, and nonprofits. They want to do their part to reduce the waste typical of the payroll industry, and in keeping with that, all of the payrolls they process are paperless. This eliminates the bulk of the paper resources used in the payroll process. The small amount of necessary paper they use is shredded and fed to their composting worms. When Tamra Gill envisioned this company, being a 1% for the Planet member and forming relationships with nonprofits was part of that vision. They’re excited to be a member of a community of businesses with similar values and they plan on donating to an organization in the Santa Barbara community.

We hope you support the products and services of these two new members! Welcome to 1% for the Planet!

I am excited to introduce Stoecker Ecological to the 1% for the Planet network. Although they are a new member, both the company and its founder have been involved with our organization directly and indirectly for years.
Since 1999, Stoecker Ecological has focused on conducting sound biological assessments of watersheds; prioritizing restoration opportunities for wild salmon and steelhead populations, while overseeing collaborative projects to improve ecosystem health and recover wild runs of fish. Stoecker Ecological has spearheaded the removal of over three-dozen dams and other migration barriers to reconnect and improve habitat quality for wild steelhead and salmon. Stoecker Ecological received the 2009 Riparian Challenge Award from the American Fisheries Society for the removal of almost a dozen steelhead migration barriers on Carpinteria Creek. Thanks to their efforts and support, the endangered fish can once again swim from the ocean back to the uppermost natural limits of the watershed.

Since its formation, Stoecker Ecological has embraced the principles of 1% for the Planet by volunteering over one hundred hours and donating a portion of their annual revenue to environmental non-profits. Joining 1% FTP will let others know what the company is doing to improve the quality of our environment.
Stoecker Ecological’s owner, Matt Stoeker, has been involved with 1% FTP for a number of years through his connection to 1% FTP non-profit partner group, Beyond Searsville Dam. This group is advocating for the responsible removal of Stanford University’s ecologically destructive and antiquated Searsville Dam. Matt also worked alongside 1% FTP’s founder, Yvon Chouinard, to hatch the idea for a film about the dam removal and river restoration movement, called DamNation, which is currently in production. DamNation is being co-produced by Stoecker Ecological and 1% FTP member Felt Soul Media.

As you can see, Stoeker Ecological has many connections to 1% for the Planet, and we are thankful that they have decided to join as a member to make this connection even stronger! Welcome to our network!

Q: What do a farmer, a brewery, a musician, a couple of fly-fishermen and a custom bike builder all have in common? A: The planet. They all know that without it, the creativity, craftsmanship, travel, talent and fruits of the earth all wouldn’t be possible.
Next Q: What do these people all do about it? We are pleased to reveal the answer in our first 1% for the Planet short film, due out early this fall. For a tickle, check out a clip on our newly revamped YouTube Page or through the linked photo above.
