Celebrating (more than) 100 French Members

Posted on August 3rd, 2010 by jake

BREAKING: Our members in France are now celebrating their 100th 103rd member! But before we missed the 100th member party entirely, our very own Marketing VP, Melody, caught up with 1% member / photographer Emmanuel Donfut from his company Balao for a Skype interview and inspiring slideshow. Watch a couple minutes in for a view of 1% in France through a camera’s lens.

With this aptly chosen reenactment of the famous French Revolution painting, Liberty Leading the People, member companies on the French Riviera celebrate a present-day tour de force: 100 members of 1% for the Planet… and counting!

In back: Arnaud Charlier, Waveconulting; Manou, PEPS SPIRIT; Emmanuel Donfut, Balao
In front: Frédéric Glo, South Shore Bicycle

Getting members together for a networking event is a great way to share sustainability stories, recruit prospective companies to join, collaborate around a new giving project, or show off the great people, companies, and non-profits behind 1%. Big thanks — and CONGRATULATIONS — to the 1% members in France for expanding the pool of funding going to environmental projects each year.

Forecastle by the numbers

Posted on July 19th, 2010 by grace

1,870 miles (in one red Prius, average 50.1 MPG)

5 state borders crossed

28 state license plates spotted along the way

4 lbs. blueberries

30,000 concertgoers

3 days

95 bands

6 hours of hula hooping

300 frisbees

1% for the Planet

1% ventured south from Vermont to Louisville (“Looavul” as we learned), KY to catch some tunes (and rays) at the Forecastle Festival.  Since it got started in 2002 as a gathering at a local park, Forecastle has grown into an exuberant three day bonanza of music, art, and activism on the banks of the Ohio River.  In addition to snagging acts like The Flaming Lips, Widespread Panic, The Smashing Pumpkins, and 1% artist Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, this year Forecastle became the first music festival to join 1% for the Planet.  Brittany and Grace represented 1% at Forecastle this year, partnering with Patagonia Footwear to sell the new Advocate Moc and talk to concert-goers about 1% (while also finding plenty of time to hula hoop!).

For more photos of the event, check out our ‘1% sightings’ album.  Have a 1% sighting to share? Email us your photo— witty caption required—and we’ll post it!

Open Conference Call with Slow Money

To download the entire MP3 audio file (36 min; 24.8 MB) right click (PC) or command click (Mac) on this link, then “Save Link As…”.

Join us Wednesday, May 12th, at 1:00 pm EDT (New York time) for a brown bag lunch call with Woody Tasch, founder and president of Slow Money, a nonprofit that connects investors to their local economies.

Today, a growing movement stands behind the idea that our lives would be richer if money would just slow down a bit. By directing our money into more local enterprise (remember the “buy local” and “eat local” movements?) the Slow Money team says we can take a vital first step toward building what they call a ‘nurture capital industry.’ But the truth is, investing locally just isn’t easy at this point. Take, for example, our retirement savings: when we put money away, those funds are teleported into a global capital market that shuffles around 3 trillion dollars each day. Imagine putting this money to work locally.

Next Wednesday, Woody Tasch will explain to us how moving towards more local economic principles can benefit our planet and everyone involved.

Enter your contact information below to sign up for the call. Then keep an eye out for an email will all the call-in instructions. The call, including a question and answer session with Woody, will last about an hour.

Registration is no longer available — this call has already taken place.

We’ve posted the recorded call above!

About Woody Tasch and Slow Money:
Slow Money is a new nonprofit organizing an international movement to bring money back down to earth.

Founded by Woody Tasch, a pioneer in merging investing and philanthropy, Slow Money’s mission is to build local and national networks, and develop new financial products and services, dedicated to:
• investing in small food enterprises and local food systems;
• connecting investors to their local economies; and,
• building the nurture capital industry.

Can’t make the call? No problem — you can still submit a question. Just send an email with your name, location, and question to brownbag@onepercentfortheplanet.org.  We’ll post the full audio recording of the call right on this blog following the call, so you can always peruse past BBL calls on your own schedule.

Mahalo Kokua!

Many thanks to our non-profit partner, the Kokua Foundation, for putting together yet another fabulous eco-friendly festival in light of Earth Day!!  The sixth annual Kokua Festival took place on April 23rd and 24th featuring 1% member Jack Johnson, alongside Ziggy Marley, Taj Mahal, Anuhea, and Jake Shimabukuro.

1% FTP settled itself quite literally at the intersection of business and the environment with our booth between member company Brushfire Records, and non-profit partner, Re-Use Hawaii!  Not too far down the green, greetings were shared with other 1% organizations such as member companies, Muumuu Heaven, Patagonia and LLLLIFE, and non-profit recipients Sierra Club and Surfrider Foundation.  Kokua was a spectacularly festive event, bringing together music junkies, outdoor enthusiasts, foodies, treehuggers, children, smiles and more – all great contributors to the 1% community!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello!!  It was terrific to meet the faces behind the 1% network, be they members, non-profit partners, 1% fans and followers, or simply folks stopping by to get more information!  Mahalo!!

P.S. As we await the release of Jack’s new album this June, check out his latest widgets!

Greening it Forward

During our recent jaunt to Utah, we had the pleasure of catching up with a slew of members and non-profit recipients.  At the Outdoor Retailer show, we were happy to share the Backcountry Village with the recipient non-profits Winter Wildlands Alliance and Protect Our Winters, and 1% member company, Green Laces, and to learn more about what they’ve been up to.

laces

Pro soccer player Natalie Spigler founded Green Laces on a simple premise: give athletes an easy way to green up their act. Athletes, ranging from Olympians to NFL players, and everyday folk make a promise to incorporate an environmentally friendly behavior into their daily routine, and to wear green shoelaces signifying their commitment to the environment.  Much like the ubiquitous yellow Live Strong bracelets raise awareness and much-needed funds for cancer research, Green Laces aims to make their all recycled, sustainably packaged laces a mascot for the environment.

Forty percent of each Green Laces purchase funds 1% recipient non-profits, like Protect Our Winters, 350.org, and the Surfrider Foundation.  What’s more, when you purchase your own pair of Green Laces, you can select which of the featured non-profits you’d like to support with your purchase.

A sneak peek at 1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1

Josh Ritter in concert

Q: What do Josh Ritter, Jack Johnson, G. Love, and Grace Potter all have in common?

A: Besides being bodacious rockstars, they are all featured artists on our upcoming release, 1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1

Scheduled for release in early January, 1%  for the Planet the Music Vol. 1, is a one-of-a kind compilation.  More than forty artists have donated rare and exclusive tracks to produce the first album dedicated to supporting the environment. All proceeds from album sales go to 1% for the Planet, and many of the artists featured are members themselves.  The all-digital release will be available online in just a few weeks, so stay tuned for more information on how to get your copy.

P.S. If his current tour has a stop in your area, be sure to check out Josh Ritter in concert. Several of us from the 1% team had the privilege last weekend and were treated to an incredible show.  A longtime friend and supporter of 1% for the Planet, Josh even made a few plugs for 1% during his set!

New Planeteers

brittany, grace and kayaks

The 1% team has been growing fast this fall with two new additions, Brittany Nunnink (left) and Grace Kronenberg (right).  Both have hit the ground running, and can be found behind the 1% HQ during lunch hour with their whitewater kayaks–class-V cornfields only.

Brittany Nunnink is a recent alumna of Scripps College, with a B.A. in Environmental Analysis. A native Vermonter, she’s happy to be out of southern California and back in the Green Mountain State running through sap lines, sipping ginger jack, hiking with her St. Bernard, and of course, helping to promote responsible business practices.  Brittany has done some work with Seventh Generation in the past, and is interested in helping more (and soon ALL) businesses to take on a similar responsible business approach – doing business for positive change, while simultaneously perceiving ones business practices with a holistic perspective. Currently, she’s working with member services, helping Chrissy with global membership wrangling and support. She is also hoping to get office composting underway and do some fundraising for a double-sided printer!

Brittany loves beets and we call her the Terminator.

Grace Kronenberg is a 2006 graduate of Middlebury College where she majored in psychology and creative writing.  Before joining the 1% team she spent three years growing Choose Responsibility, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting national debate on the 21 year-old drinking age.  Previous employment took her to Washington, DC, but she is happy to be back in the Green Mountain State and is looking forward to all the skiing, running, and hiking the Mad River Valley has to offer.  Grace is excited to be working at the intersection of business and the environment, and is currently focused on marketing support for the upcoming 1% music and film releases.

Grace is hoping to free the heel this winter and give telemark skiing a try.
