Environmentally Minded Executive Management

I was once told to invest in land & property, because there wasn’t any more being made. A “sound” investment, is how it had been explained to me. However, even a casual glance into the real estate world can easily show that it is definitely rough waters these days. As an owner of real estate, I would have loved to have some help in navigating these waters in a way that would lead to a solid return on my investment. Dealing with tenants and property issues.. it can seem like a never ending barrage of problems and broken fixtures. The questions I have had in the past remain unanswered as to how to move forward.

Based out of Vernon, British Columbia, Executive Management works with real estate investors to ensure their investment is protected and operating optimally. They know that the lack of control of a real estate investment is the single biggest frustration and one of the biggest expenses for investors. They provide their investors with the tools and resources to manage their property the way they want to (with Executive Management’s expert advice and direction of course.)

Their services offered range from property management to tenant placement.  They are forward thinking with their management options as well, offering a internet-based remote property management software, which enables investors to manage their properties online, 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the world.  Their services are also transparent between tenants and owners, improving the efficiency and quality of property management.

They have shown their commitment to the environment by recently joining the 1% member network.  As explained by Ian from Executive Management, “I was fortunate to have parents that took me out into the wilderness and showed me nature up close and personal. I want to be able to do the same for my children and their children, but need to make sure there would still be something for them to experience. 1% for the planet provides me that opportunity..”

We welcome Executive Management to the 1% for the Planet Network!

Armed & Botanical

Posted on March 9th, 2012 by

The timing of writing this blog today is completely apropos. For the first time in my life, I have stopped shaving and grown a beard. It’s not that I’m lazy, or think that I pull the ‘facial hair’ look off particularly well. I didn’t even grow it to keep warm in the winter months here in Vermont (what winter?).

Shaving and I just aren’t good friends. I have run the gamut of razors and creams, only to draw the line at the cheap and amazingly wasteful toss-away razors. No matter the attempt, my steady musicians hand always winds up nicking my face or neck and I wind up with amazingly irritated skin.

Enter Eco-Armour.

Founder Robert Benzinger began searching for a solution after getting fed up with the continual shaving-related mishaps I suffer from.  After years of trial & error, and with the help of his wife Zoe, a licensed skin-care expert, Robert finally found the perfect combination and Eco-Armour foam and body wash was born.

Eco-Armour is made of witch hazel extract, citric acid, essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, rosemary and tea tree, and carrier oils including coconut, sunflower and palm kernel.  Each ingredient was selected for its healing, nourishing and cleansing properties. The essential oils in the foam also provide an aroma therapy with their calming and invigorating scents.

As a long time environmentalist, Robert decided that he would only use all natural and organic renewable resource ingredients.  Eco-Armour doesn’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate, butane, parabens, or other chemicals that often stress the skin and strip away natural oils. It’s 100% botanical.

In addition to saving your skin, the foam also helps prolong the life of the razor with the metal-preserving properties of the witch hazel and citric acid. Robert recommends that customers apply additional foam to the razor after they’ve rinsed it with water at the end of their shave. This step helps extend the blade life and improve the razor’s performance.

Eco-Armour was originally aimed at men, but is now very popular with the ladies, who make up about 65% of customers. Women use it both as a foam and as a face and body wash.

We welcome Robert and Eco-Armour to our 1% family!

I, for one, am looking forward to checking out Eco-Armour and experiencing a botanically charged shaving experience for myself.  But maybe not just yet – I am just starting to dig my look with a beard..

Diversity and Dedication

One of the most amazing facets of working for 1% is learning about diversity among our member companies. No two companies are quite the same, except when it comes to their dedication to protecting our planet and promoting sustainability. This point is exemplified with two of our newest members, Four Crows Photography and Polar Pillow.

Four Crows Photography is dedicated capturing the beauty of the natural world that surrounds us, and those moments of serenity that too often go unnoticed in the frantic pace of daily life. Photographer Dave Mangels launched Four Crows with the mission to practice mindful photography, as well as contributing back to the planet in which inspires him.  Shedding his life in a cubicle and armed with a camera and an amazing eye, these photographs capture the majesty and beauty of the world that we strive to protect.

“As someone launching a new business, I thought it was vital to build an ethical and moral foundation to Four Crows Photography. My participation in 1% For The Planet is an essential way to demonstrate my commitment to the environmental causes that are so important to my artistic inspiration. Four Crows Photography plans to support a variety of causes as it grows, but foremost among them will be the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance for its work defending the Redrock wilderness, and the Trustees of the Reservation for its preservation of open spaces in my home state of Massachusetts.”

1% also welcomes PolarPillow to our family. As a person who is all-too-familiar with erratic sleep patterns and insomnia, I was fascinated to learn more about this company and what it offers for people who cope with the same issues.

PolarPillow is an award-winning cooling pillow that uses specialized gel technology to generate coolness. By bringing science-based innovation to the pillow market, the company aims to help its customers sleep better and live healthier. The pillow itself is kept cool, which in turn promotes a better and more restful night of sleep.

The PolarPillow team has joined the 1% movement to demonstrate their belief that the health of the planet is critical for entrepreneurship to thrive. PolarPillow has identified Philippe Cousteau’s EarthEcho International as its first beneficiary. EarthEcho creates programs that empower youth to restore and protect our oceans.

From breathtaking natural photography to pillows that help people rest better and promote health, our members continue to be as diverse as the planet that we share. Aligned by their dedication to protecting the world around us, we welcome these amazing companies to our 1% family and are so happy to have you!

1% for our Furry Friends

Posted on February 8th, 2012 by

Since beginning my work here at 1% for the Planet, I have been truly amazed at the scope of hopeful stories I have encountered. The positive changes that come across our network come in all forms, from large land donations to simple stories, like this story of The Lands Coucil, that lift my heart.

Over the past two summers in Washington State, The Lands Council has been saving and moving wildlife from potentially harmful situations. One recent story involved relocating a beaver family from under human foot in Spokane to their new home in the Colville National Forest.

Supported through donations from 1% member Patagonia, The Lands Council has successfully and safely relocated almost 40 beavers, moving them into areas where they are able to do as nature intended – build dams that assist in water storage and late-season flow, water filtration and that cater to the restoration of native riparian species.

This compassionate work is another amazing story proving that even 1% of positive action can have a major effect for the planet, and for our furry friends that we share it with. Like the stone thrown that produces a ripple effect in the water, these actions contribute to a positive change that is immeasurable.

Thank you Amanda Swan for sharing this uplifting moment with our network, and keep up the amazing work!

Greening up Pennsylvania

What else is a business that exists to write incredibly useful software that improves your business doing to help the world? Here’s what!

Upon supporting ClearWater Conservancy this past year, West Arete Computing has helped to protect 152 acres of land, which will be incorporated into Pennsylvania’s Rothrock State Forest.

Permanently conserving this property will protect an unnamed tributary to Galbraith Gap Run, one of only five remaining in the Spring Creek Watershed with a reproducing wild brook trout population. In addition to supporting the native species, protecting the Rothrock State Forest will ensure that hikers, birdwatchers, mountain bikers, hunters and cross country skiers can continue to take advantage of this remarkable place.

Working hand in hand with West Arete Computing through donations and employee volunteer time, this 1% partnership has helped green up Central Pennsylvania, and protected precious land for generations to come!
