Our dedicated followers may remember our series of posts about the Ecotrust Sundown Concert Series last summer; well, even though we aren’t sponsoring the series this year our members have still been highly involved. LiFT Label Bobby Bonaparte recaps, “Portland 1% for the Planet members, Ecotrust, Patagonia & LiFT Label, kicked off Sundown at Ecotrust 2012 concert series with a flash mob fashion show and a band try out. When opening band AU finished their set, Bobby Bonaparte and Anthony Villella of LiFT Label took the stage to hold open auditions for local band Typhoon. The crowd was stoked about the dancing and everyone was looking fly the audition turned into a fashion show. Silvania, El Karti and Sticks & Stones joined for an epic fashion show that emphasized local and organic apparel.”
It’s great to see that our members are continuing to collaborate in the Portland area and are so eager to share their 1% for the Planet commitments with the community! Bobby says, “It was a great time to have the 1% for the Planet members working together the make the show a success!”
Thanks again, Portland members! If you want to see a video of the fashion show you can view it here.

Imagine a company that consults in order to create a better world. While there could be more than one in your mind you may be thinking of one of 1% for the Planet’s newest members, Imaginally. When asked what made Imaginally consider 1% for the Planet membership, and executive responded, “Imaginally is committed to helping further all efforts towards a healthier planet. Our own primary contribution is to promote understanding of, and work with, the human and cultural drivers of organizational success, to build healthier organizations. An inevitable result of the organizational robustness we seek to create is increased respect for the global context within which we all live. 1% for the Planet is an organization that is changing the paradigm of what success looks like and that’s why we are pleased to be joining as a member, along with such a great group of businesses and organizations.”
We are very happy to welcome Imaginally to our network and look forward to seeing the changes they are able to make through their business!

YourCableStore.com is more than just an online retailer. The store specializes in selling just about every cable you could need for your home but also is strongly committed to protecting the environment. Amy Arendt of the company says, “Upon entering our small Sierra Nevada foothills town, a sign says, ‘Paradise- to be all its name implies.’ We have trails, flumes, wildlife, and mountain fresh water all around us. Joining the 1% for the Planet family will help us partner with local programs to strengthen their presence and causes. We believe our small efforts on a local scale will help preserve all that is Paradise.”
It’s wonderful when a company like this has such a strong connection with the area they’re located in and take the next step to make sure their natural home remains intact and beautiful.

White Leaf Photography is Brian Van Tighem’s way to integrate people with nature. Brian believes, “As a business owner… we need to work towards a mutually beneficial system. I specialize in on location wedding and portrait photography, blending the beauty of our natural surroundings with the unique characters of the people I photograph.”
Brian’s primary area of concern as far as the environment is carbon emissions. “As a photographer who travels around, my carbon footprint can sometimes be a deep one. Since 2009, I have purchased gold standard carbon credits (www.less.ca) for all of my business travel to offset emissions. I have also switched over to eco-friendly product suppliers such as handmade eco-friendly albums and prints, as well as recycled frames and digital file delivery incentives. My websites are hosted on servers powered by 100% renewable energy, as is much of the power used in my home office.”
Thanks to Brian as well for fulfilling his duty in caring for the world he captures through photos every day.

Yesterday wrapped up a few weeks worth of organizing for a webinar hosted by B Lab and 1% for the Planet. The webinar was intended to provide insight on how to best design strategic philanthropy practices. The call featured speakers from both organizations as well as four businesses that made the decision to be both a member of 1% for the Planet and a B Corporation.
Janie Hoffman from Mamma Chia, Kelsey Marshall from Grounds for Change, Kate O’Brien from Alima Pure Cosmetics, and Casey Sheahan from Patagonia all answered questions from both listeners and our own VP of Organizational Development, Rebecca.

One question posed was, does membership in 1% for the Planet impact relationships with retailers and suppliers? Janie answered by stating that when she first approached Whole Foods the B Corp, 1% FTP, and other logos had “been on our labels, had been on our certification labels, [Whole Foods wasn’t] familiar with B Corp, with Slow money but they were brought up in meetings. But they obviously knew 1% for the Planet.”
It was great to hear such a strong response 1% FTP membership! Casey Sheahan posited in response to the same questions that “Virtually [every member] I’ve talked to has seen a lift in business.”

The webinar was well worth all of the preparation and we couldn’t have asked for better speakers, each representative had clear, precise ideas to share on the impact of the partnerships that formed their businesses in such a significant way.
For more questions, and interviews with B Lab coordinators stay tuned!

1% for the Planet would like to welcome one of its newest members, George Soules Photography. George is a Mad River Valley resident who is very active in our community. George says about his photography business, “Though I’ve been a photographer since I was in high school, I kept my day job as a software architect for over 30 years. Now in my mid-fifties, I’m pursuing my passion for photography and seeking ways to use it to help others.”

George Soules has already made his first 1% FTP donation, choosing to support the Vermont Land Trust, thus using his passion to help others! George also donated significant time to our office when he came and took portraits and group photos of all of the employees. The afternoon was great, sunny, warm, a light breeze, and of course some beautiful people trying out Robert Deniro impressions.
We look forward to having George Soules Photography in our network and can’t wait to see what great photos he takes next!

Il Palazzone, an Italian vineyard recently took another step in greening their business, this time by looking externally and joining the 1% for the Planet network. Il Palazzone has been focusing on internal sustainability, implementing and utilizing only organic processes and materials and has decreased their carbon footprint by reducing bottle weight by 1/3 (don’t worry the weight loss is from glass not less wine!).

Mandy of Il Palazzone remarks, “At Il Palazzone, we believe that Il vino si fa in vigna, or the wine is made on the vine. In order to produce a great wine, which is our first priority, you need to start with a great grape. You don’t get great grapes by spraying them with chemicals and artificial treatments, but by nurturing a healthy ecosystem. We joined 1% for the Planet because we’re proud to join a network of companies who also believe in sustainability and making responsible decisions.”
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Il Palazzone to the 1% community and express thanks for their commitment to the earth. We look forward to working with them and hearing about their future partnerships!

Essential Safe Products (ESP), a 1% member, cares deeply about the environment, the oceans in particular. ESP recently funded an event held by Oceana that was intended to launch the new SeaBlue campaign and raise awareness of the ocean’s importance to Florida. Hannah, President at ESP remarked, “We love what Oceana is all about because as Floridians, we are surrounded by water and know how important it is to keep it clean and keep animals safe! It aligns with what we do at ESP because in addition to supporting a healthy lifestyle we also want to promote a healthy environment. Without our oceans, Florida wouldn’t be!”

The event featured several high profile ambassadors for Oceana, musical guests, artists, hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and an auction. The group organized a petition requesting that Governor Rick Scott places a state ban on the trade of shark fins, highlighting the inhuman treatment of the sharks whose fins are harvested. Hannah reported that, “The event was a lot of fun. People seemed to be very excited about bidding on items and getting their money in the right hands to help our oceans. The Oceana ambassadors were particularly passionate about Oceana and its purpose.”

We applaud the work of all of our members and non-profit partners and love to hear your stories. Your work together helps drive the environmental movement and we can’t thank you enough!

You may not know it, but your key card could be helping to raise funds for an environmental non-profit organization! The Greenfield Group, a San Diego based advertising company, helps clients gain awareness among customers of the hotel industry by advertising on room keys.

Greenfield Group is one of the recent businesses to join 1% for the Planet, therefore, throwing down the gauntlet with their environmental commitment. “Key card advertising is purely a means to attain funds to make a positive impact in the world. We believe that the quality and success of an individuals or businesses life can be measured by the number of lives that were changed for the better and the positive impact made to the planet,” says Rob, owner of The Greenfield Group.
The Greenfield Group’s clients will not only be helping the environment by supporting this 1% business but will also be exposed to hundreds if not thousands of guests that enter their hotel rooms daily. The demographic of this group is also huge because so many different types of people stay at hotels across the country.
Thank you, Greenfield Group, for all that you do for the environment and we wish you the best of luck with your business.

What a day! As promised, 1% for the Planet participated in and sponsored a Climate Impacts Day event in our hometown of Waitsfield, VT, this past Saturday afternoon. The event was successful, informative, and fun! Booths where people talked about their local businesses or their non-profit organization, a panel of community members whose homes or businesses were damaged by flooding that occurred during Tropical Storm Irene last August, and speeches from Senator Bernie Sanders, Bill McKibben and an array of other local organizations, all echoed the importance of working to curb climate change.

The event culminated in the formation of a human dot in a large field, where a couple hundred people in attendance all joined hands and gathered around a giant canvas dot that said “Vermont, USA Connects the Dots.” A small heli-cam flew overhead and took pictures of the crowd’s formation. Our event’s picture was then added to thousands at 350.org, all screaming the same thing, climate change is directly connected to extreme weather!

I’d like to thank everyone, on behalf of 1%, who helped put this event together and everyone else all around the world who took part in helping the growth of the climate change movement. If you’d like to see photos of the event check them out on our Facebook or Pinterest pages!
