Adventure Science: Bison outside my tent

Landmark is ASC’s groundbreaking project to provide “boots on the ground” support for the American Prairie Reserve management team. Wildlife survey crews consist of skilled outdoors men and women who live and work on Montana’s northern Great Plains, collecting data that informs APR’s conservation management decisions.

Many Landmark adventure science volunteers arrive at American Prairie Reserve expecting it to be flat and uninteresting. After a month or two living there, they leave with Montana’s prairie country completely intertwined with thesouls.

Dramatic sunsets and huge skies, wildlife, microclimates hidden in the coulees and draws, the Little Rocky Mountains to the west, the quirky, friendly small towns nearby, and the camaraderie among crew members – these details leave an imprint.

We interviewed Teri Ness, a member of the Landmark June crew, as she was about to head home to Clover, South Carolina.

“I’m going to miss everything about this place,” she said.
