SOLVE’s Annual Women in Science Day 2014 a Success!
On Saturday, March 1st, SOLVE’s K-12 Education program, Green Team, held it’s annual Women In Science Day at Heritage Village in Beaverton Oregon. Forty young women and ten female mentors, with careers in the sciences, all attended this event.
The day kicked off with a presentation highlighting the history and importance of women in the sciences. Historically, women have been largely excluded from the field and have been overwhelmingly underrepresented. However, all people benefit from women being involved in the science field as the ingenuity, creativity and passion of approximately half of the human population has just begun to be tapped! SOLVE’s Green Team hosted this event in order to connect young women with mentors in the field and show them that a career in the sciences could be a welcome reality to them.
The event ended with a team builder when the group headed outside and planting and mulching two hundred and twenty-five native plants and shrubs along a tributary of Willow Creek. The event was a huge success and everyone at SOLVE is so thankful for all of our attendees, donors, mentors and Elizabeth Anderson for demonstrating during the event!
See you next year!
