“I decided to challenge my own apathy and get involved” — Penn Newhard on creating change

Penn Newhard, 1% for the Planet Ambassador and Protect Our Winters board member, knows a thing or two about advocating for change.

You can join him–and Chris Davenport–at Outdoor Retailer next week. And if you’re lucky, you could travel to one of the most remote parts of the globe for the ski trip of a lifetime, just for making a donation to POW. Penn shared his reasons for working on behalf of nonprofits in advance of Outdoor Retailer, where leaders from the outdoor industry and their nonprofit counterparts will be gathering next week.

According to Penn, “My involvement with 1% and as a Board member for Protect Our Winters stems from two sentiments. The first is personally driven, and comes from being inspired by people who are unafraid to take on big projects and goals.

If you look at human achievement in adventure, science or culture, it is the people who are not intimidated by the scale of the situation who break through and create progress. So realizing how I find this ‘humbly fearless’ trait impressive rather than sit on the sidelines or write a check for $50 and call it good, I decided to challenge my own apathy and get involved.

This second point is important. People worry that they do not have the time or a skill to contribute. But it is the act of participating and adding an extra hand and energy that collectively moves the needle. Individual apathy and stasis are the enemy. The bigger the problem  – whether climate change or social movement – the more participation is needed.”

If you care about our planet, love winter and are interested in making change, consider supporting POW during their Ultima Thule campaign. Each $5 donation gets you an entry and a chance to ski one of the world’s most remote–and largest–protected environments with Chris Davenport.
