Assistant Water Resources Technician (2 Positions)
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) is a community based agency that works in partnership with watershed municipalities the natural environment. CLOCA provides environmental services within the Region of Durham, from the Oak Ridges Moraine to Lake Ontario – from Ajax/Pickering in the west to Clarington in the east. CLOCA owns and manages over 2,250 hectares of conservation lands protecting significant wetlands, valleylands, forests, meadows, groundwater resources and wildlife habitats, as well as providing valuable spaces for Durham residents to enjoy the natural environment.
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) is seeking two summer students for the position of Assistant Water Resources Technician. Wage Rate per Hour: $10.25 per hour and is based on a 35-hour work week with the possibility of weekend or evening work. RESPONSIBILITIES – The Assistant will support the water monitoring program by conducting stream baseflow and highflow measurements and analysis at pre-determined sites throughout CLOCA’s watershed. Adapt our Lake Ontario Shoreline Erosion Survey, install monitoring equipment and conduct water quality samples. In addition, the Assistant will assist in occasional Conservation Areas Operation. Stream Baseflow Assessment – The Authority is currently working with MNR and MOE on the Low Water Response Program. The basis of this program is monitoring rainfall and stream flow within the creeks of our watershed. The Authority has initiated a stream baseflow assessment program. The main objective is to obtain base flow information to assist in the development of a long term baseflow monitoring network. Using a pre-determined distribution of measurement sites, the Assistant will measure stream velocity using a flow meter; calculate flow for each site using Excel spreadsheet; provide the following information at each site: Stream temperature, Nature of stream condition (riffled, ponding, sluggish, etc.), Substrate description (gravel, silt, clay, etc.); and, populate an Access database for all collected information. Stream & Precipitation Gauge Station Maintenance – Will help the Environmental Engineering Analyst repair damaged stations, move and/or install new equipment, install swm pond loggers, install loggers in headwater creeks to measure base flow during the summer months and conduct water quality samples. Lake Ontario Shoreline Erosion Surveys – Will digitize the top of slope from digital air photos, compare the line work against existing surveys and establish yearly recession rates for established Lake Ontario Shoreline erosion sites. Field inspections including photos and GPS measurements may be required. Conservation Areas Operation – The Authority currently operates several Conservation Areas that are open to the public for passive recreation. The Assistant will assist with the various duties involved in the operation of our Conservation Areas.
QUALIFICATIONS – The successful candidate should have the following: • University/college student with experience in engineering or environmental resources or technology • Comfort with doing field work and working with field equipment • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access (ArcView software knowledge is an asset) • Valid Ontario G driver's license • Transportation to CLOCA office The following are desirable, but not mandatory: • Land surveying • Operation of a flow meter • Contour map reading • ArcMap or GIS experience • Current first aid/CPR certification Participants must be: 1) between 15 & 30 years; 2) registered as a full-time student (previous year and intend to return full-time); 3) a Canadian citizens; 4) entitled to work in Canada. Position is dependent on confirmation of funding.
