The Elwha Nearshore

IMG_20131115_151435

Welcome to the Elwha Nearshore. -the critical nursery area for all our iconic species that are the focus of largest implemented-and publicly funded-dam removal  watershed restoration project in the nation. See anything amiss? Note the post apocalyptic shoreline armoring (complete with brand new large rock placed EXACTLY where upwards of 7,000,000 cubic meters (that’s 355,000 dump truck loads)  of habitat nourishing sediment could otherwise be delivered and  forage fish spawning would otherwise occur-(just behind biologist Nicole Harris).  Over 60 percent of this drift cell is armored-with more rock being added regularly. This is wrong. The Coastal Watershed Institute  is working hard to focus work on this highly impaired and clearly sediment starved nearshore to promote tractable restoration actions.  Join us.
