Lecture by Yvon in 2006 Was The Catalyst to Join
I first heard about One Percent for the Planet from my eldest son, Asa, who had seen Yvon Chouinard speak at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2006. We were discussing environmental problems and ways to solve them when he told me about this alliance of concerned businesses he had heard about that was set up to help protect the earth by contributing to nonprofit organizations. I was intrigued and shortly thereafter Vertical Access joined the movement.
We chose to direct a portion of our contributions to the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) as this organization so closely aligns to the core of our business – contributing to the historic preservation and adaptive recycling of existing buildings and structures. After all, “the greenest building is one that’s already built”.
Vertical Access remains committed to One Percent for the Planet because we strive to do our part to help protect the earth by enabling the efforts of nonprofit organizations doing great work. In addition to APT we have also directed our contributions to the United States / International Council on Monuments and Sites, and Engineers for a Sustainable World.
