It Was Great to Meet You, Craig!
Last week I was fortunate enough to be passing through West Yellowstone, Montana and able to meet Craig Mathews at Blue Ribbon Flies! Meeting one of the founders of our organization was an incredibly inspiring opportunity. I asked Craig about how and why he decided to found 1% for the Planet, along with Yvon Chouinard, and what I got in return was a very compelling response. He explained his belief that businesses that use the natural environment in their work (like guide services and outdoor gear manufacturers) should feel obligated to return something, particularly, by donating 1% of their sales back to groups who are working to protect or restore. The way Craig explained this concept to me, as well as the concept of 1% for the Planet in general, made it clear how passionate he is about the model and made me all the more proud to work here!
The shop itself was great too; the selection and variety of gear (a lot of which was from other 1% FTP members!) was extensive and all surrounded a small work desk where Craig or others will hand tie flies right there in the middle of everything. The whole time I was there people were coming in and out, greeting everyone that works there and being greeted, by name, in return. Blue Ribbon Flies really seemed like a place where customers are regular and treated with tremendous respect, courtesy, and friendliness.
Thank you so much, Craig and everyone else at Blue Ribbon Flies for making my visit welcoming, enjoyable, and helpful. I’ll be sure to stop by next time I’m in West Yellowstone!
