Fair Trade Strikes a Note with American Consumers

American consumers are jumping on the fair trade bandwagon.  The most recent numbers released by the retail research organization SPINS show a 75% sales growth.  This compares to a 19% fair trade sales growth in the UK, the most advanced fair trade nation in the world.

Mainstream retailers leading the way

Whole Foods Market ‘s  shoppers are responding to the company’s fair trade effort, helping to pay more than $2.5 million in Community Development premiums for Fair Trade Certified products.  More than $1 million in banana premiums,  $1 million in flower premiums, and $300,000 in pineapple premiums are included in the $2.5 million.  All of the money goes to fund projects in the countries and communities that grow these products.

Whole Foods sees the Whole Trade® Guarantee label as the extension of the company’s WTrade_Logo_FINAL_200core values.  In order to bear this label, a product must:

  • Meet Whole Foods strict product quality standards
  • Provide more money to producers
  • Ensure better wages and working conditions for workers
  • Care for the environment
  • Donate 1% of sales to Whole Planet Foundation®

A more ethically attuned consumer

Fair Trade USA, verifies that more and more consumers are becoming concerned about ethics than they used to be.  Mary Jo Cook, chief impact officer of Fair Trade USA, the leading third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States, said,  “If price and quality are similar, over half of consumers now say they will switch brands in favor of a company with more ethical practices.”

The Fair Trade USA organization is probably the most influential body in the US in spreading awareness of the societal benefits of buying fair trade products.

Their mission is to:

“… enable sustainable development and community empowerment by cultivating a more equitable global trade model that benefits farmers, workers, consumers, industry, and the earth.”

The organization achieves its mission by certifying and promoting Fair Trade products.

The recent upward swing Fair-Trade merchandise sales clearly illustrates that consumers are increasingly interested in products bearing third-party ethics and sustainability guarantees.  What remains to be done is continuing to promote customer education, further increasing consumer awareness, and keeping the Fair-Trade promise clear as more and more manufacturers and retailers enter the market.
