Costa Rica News: early morning earthquake shakes CR
This morning at 3:41 am, I woke up by my bed shaking and rumbling. It took me a few seconds to figure out it was not my husband jumping on the bed and that is was an earthquake. The epic-center of this earthquake occurred near the Island of Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean side of Panama.
The earthquaked measuring a 5.7 on the Richter scale, took place in a shallow depth of 7 miles off the coast, which is perhaps why this quake was felt throughout out Costa Rica. Authorities in Costa Rica and Panama stated no reports of injuries or damages due to the earthquake, only everybody in this region got a “natural wake up call!”
Throughout Central America there are many active volcanic areas, which is why frequent earthquakes are taken place here. Living in these areas its best to plan ahead for these events. Before an earthquake happens its wise to locate a safe location in your home or work place. Find a strong point in the structure that would receive less damage and make sure everyone around know where the “ safe location” is and to be aware of the plan. If an earthquake occurs remain calm and move quickly to the safe location and encourage others to do the same. Do not stay near heavy objects and/ or items that may fall. Remain in your “safe location” until its safe, and beware aftershocks can happen. After the earthquake check for injuries, damages or hazards that may have occurred.
Sunset Surf Camp just want to share this information with others so everyone can be prepare if a earthquake occurs. Be safe!
